ROAD SAFETY NEWS - UPDATED 18 OCTOBER 2004

Road safety becomes child's play

A teacher in Lancashire has teamed up two dolls with a road safety storybook to teach her pupils how to be safer when out and about.

Elizabeth Ferris at the White Ash Special School, Oswaldtwistle, used the 'Big Book - Be Safe Out and About' and the dolls to deliver road safety messages to her pupils, many of whom have severe learning disabilities.

The book, supplied by Lancashire county council's road safety group, was recognised as a valuable road safety teaching resource with a commendation in the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards 2002.

Ann Finch, the senior road safety adviser who wrote the Big Book said: "I think it's an excellent idea using the dolls to act out the story as it is crucial to integrate road safety from a young age. By making road safety fun and interesting children can learn vital lessons to stay safe on the roads."
