Young driver campaign continues in Kent
The Kent & Medway Safety Camera Partnership is continuing its For My Girlfriend young driver campaign by distributing two new resources this autumn.
Sixth form schools and colleges across the partnership's area will receive a teaching resource that encourages students to communicate the dangers of speeding to their peers. And driving schools and instructors will receive a 'Welcome to Driving' pack to hand out to students to remind them of the dangers and risks they may face as new drivers, and what to do if they are involved in a crash.
Rachel Moon , the partnership's communications & promotions officer, said: "We are hoping that the teaching resource and welcome pack will really get pupils thinking about how vulnerable they are on the road - not just as a driver but as a passenger too. For My Girlfriend is about recognising the huge responsibility that a driving licence represents - it brings home to young people the consequences of losing a loved one because of driving too fast."

LSCP hosts second young driver debate
BBC presenter Nick Ross last week hosted the second London Safety Camera Partnership debate to engage young drivers in a bid to reduce speed-related crashes in London.
The debate, which took place on 28 September at the House of Commons, gave young people the opportunity to question a panel of prominent traffic and transport professionals. The event also included competitions, interactive displays, and a large-scale Scalectrix to help illustrate the role of safety cameras.
Young drivers account for eight per cent of London driving licences, but are involved in 18% of crashes. A recent TfL report shows that in 2004 18% of crashes involving young drivers were a consequence of driving too fast.
LSCP has also recently launched its Night to Remember campaign, which is touring universities and colleges over the next two months.

Bucks subsidises Pass Plus
Buckinghamshire's road safety team is offering new drivers the opportunity to take part in its subsidised Pass Plus scheme.
Pass Plus take up across the country is in the region of 17%, but in Buckinghamshire it is estimated to be as low as 11%. "We want to encourage novice drivers to take up further training to gain the extra skills and knowledge they need to become more able drivers," said Valerie Letheren, portfolio holder for transportation.

Cycling pilot in Brighton
Experienced cycling professional will be available on Brighton & Hove seafront over the next few weeks to talk to local cyclists and pedestrians about cycling in the city.
Sustrans, the UK's national sustainable transport charity, will supply several national cycling officers with experience of cycling in cities to encourage more people to cycle along Brighton & Hove's cycle network.
"This is a pilot project between the council and Sustrans to improve the experience of cycling in Brighton & Hove and to encourage more people to cycle for the first time on the developing cycle network", said councillor Gill Mitchell, chair of the environment committee.

SCP completes 25 years' service
School crossing patrol Pauline Chatfield from Dorset has chalked up 25 years of service helping children cross the road - which makes her the longest serving patrol in the county.
RSO Rob Camp presented her with flowers to mark the quarter-century anniversary, but her dedication in maintaining a safe, reliable facility for two generations of youngsters will be formally recognised at a presentation ceremony at County Hall, Dorchester, next year.
"Pauline is an excellent patrol whom I consider to be a friend as well as a working colleague," said Rob. "She provides a valuable service for her community and I hope she continues for many more years."

Hartlepool looks to boost SCPs
A drive to recruit more school crossing patrols is underway in a Teesside town.
RSOs in Hartlepool say that while they can currently cover the 37 school crossing patrol sites, they are concerned at a lack of back-up staff.
"We have very little spare capacity and we could face staffing problems, for example, in the event of illness," said RSO Paul Watson . "This situation certainly isn't exclusive to Hartlepool - recruitment of school crossing patrollers is a national problem."
