Step Outside with ToGo and NoGo

Two bright new characters are making an appearance in classrooms across Manchester this autumn as part of a new road safety initiative.

The animated characters, ToGo and NoGo, star in a new interactive education package developed by Manchester City Council's road safety team and education department.

Year 3 pupils (aged seven and eight years) at Cheetwood Primary School were joined by Manchester's lord mayor, councillor Mohammed Afzal Khan, as they tried out the new Step Outside programme.

Children follow the experiences of ToGo and NoGo through a series of road safety challenges, which include finding a safe place to cross, crossing the road between parked cars and finding safe places to play.

"On average more than 200 children are injured on Manchester's roads every year, which is clearly unacceptable," said councilor Richard Cowell, the council's deputy executive member for planning and environment. "Giving children the skills to keep themselves and those around them safe on the roads is vital."

Every primary school in Manchester has signed up to Step Outside and will receive the education pack, an interactive CD and details of activities that can be carried out as a class, in small groups, or by individual children.

Each child will receive a record achievement booklet, and the five-week course culminates in a practical road safety training session carried out by the council's road safety unit.
