Children check traffic speed

Northampton schoolchildren recently staged a speed-watch on traffic passing their primary school, to mark the expansion of Northamptonshire County Council's Junior Road Safety Officer (JRSO) scheme.

Under the JRSO programme, pupils from years five and six help to teach road safety messages from a child's perspective - using special assemblies, fact packs, display boards and competitions.

Last year the JRSO scheme was tested in 10 Northamptonshire schools. This year 50 schools are taking part, and the programme will be rolled out to all primary schools in the county next year.

"To misquote a well known saying, 'It is never too early to learn' - and that certainly applies to road safety," said Bob Seery cabinet member for highways and transportation.

"In addition to being able to communicate in a more easily understood manner with other children, those taking part will also learn a lot about how they can be safe on the road.

"I have no doubt that the success of this pilot scheme will be reflected in improved road safety and a reduction in the number of accidents involving children in the county."
