Firefighter road shows curbing speed
Young drivers are being urged to curb their passion for speed at a series of Cleveland Fire Brigade road shows.
Young motorists with a love of fast cars are being targeted in a series of visits to supermarket and retail car parks where they regularly meet. They are being offered road safety advice and invited aboard a community education vehicle to view a DVD.
Jimmy Ruse, road safety manager, said: "We are determined to target this vulnerable group with powerful road safety messages.
"Our campaign is working. There were 33 road deaths in our area in 2003, in 2004 the number was reduced to 30 and in 2005 the figure was down to 19 - but there is no room for complacency."
Chief fire officer, John Doyle, said: "A fire-fighter is more likely to attend a road traffic accident in which someone is killed or seriously injured than a fire."
