RoSPA: 90% back lighter evenings campaign

90% of people who have voted in an online poll run by RoSPA support the
campaign for lighter evenings all-year-round.
More than 3,200 people have registered their views and Kevin Clinton, RoSPA
head of road safety, is delighted with the results so far.
"This clearly demonstrates that there is overwhelming support for a new
system for changing our clocks," he said. "Our poll shows most people want
to stay one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time in the winter and two hours
ahead in the summer, because this would lead to around 450 fewer deaths and
serious injuries on our roads.
"We now need the Government to agree to our request for a three-year trial
which would also demonstrate the benefits to business, leisure, tourism,
health and the environment."
RoSPA is urging people to express their support by contacting their MP or
voting online at www.rospa.com/lighterevenings/.
Earlier this month, LARSOA launched its campaign for a trial of the system
favoured by RoSPA. Spokesman David Frost said: "The government says it is
committed to reducing deaths and serious injuries on the roads by 40% by
2010. Introducing double British summertime could go a long way towards
reaching this target."
