..presenting road safety across the UK

ROAD SAFETY NEWS - UPDATED 6 SEPTEMBER 2004

Mailer provides valuable information for young drivers

The latest phase of an on-going road safety campaign aimed at young drivers has launched across eastern England.

Road safety teams from seven local authorities are once again jointly presenting the For my girlfriend (FMG) campaign that has been running successfully in the region since 2002. The seven authorities are the county councils of Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk, plus Luton Borough Council, Peterborough City Council and Thurrock Council.

The campaign features a handy credit card size mailer that contains a range of information that will prove useful to younger drivers, including what to do in the event of an accident, vehicle maintenance tips and information about insurance.

The leaflet also directs readers to the FMG website, www.fmg.org.uk , where there is more detailed information to help young drivers get the most from their motoring and drive safely. The leaflet is being distributed with the help of sixth form centres, colleges and universities, nightclubs and pubs, leisure centres and major employers - places where young people are likely to be found in significant numbers.

Research conducted in the eastern region has confirmed that young drivers - especially young males - find it almost impossible to imagine killing or injuring themselves in a road crash. The study also revealed that the outcome they dread most is killing or maiming someone they are close to - possibly a girlfriend or best mate - who is travelling in a car driven by them. This outcome is considered worse than killing or injuring a pedestrian (even a child) or an unknown third party.
