Year 7 drama tours secondary schools

Theatre group, Walking Forward, will be touring secondary schools from 27 September - 1 October with their production of The Price, a hard-hitting drama that aims to encourage young people to think more seriously about road safety.

Organised by Newham Council and funded by Transport for London, The Price is being performed to students in their first year at secondary school, who have just started travelling to school by themselves.

The drama addresses issues of social responsibility, anti-social behaviour, pedestrian and road safety, peer pressure and the transition from primary to secondary education. It encourages the audience to take responsibility for both themselves and their friends and not to take risks when crossing roads.

Set in a television studio, The Price features a presenter called Slick Mepho and his friends Steady Eddie, Care Bear and Ollie, who constantly aspire to be cool. Tragedy strikes when Care Bear is killed through their thoughtless actions.

"Youngsters entering Year 7 are very nervous about transferring to secondary school," says councillor June Leitch, Newham's cabinet member for public realm. "They try very hard to make new friends and to fit into their new environment. However, it is important that they get the message that being cool doesn't involve taking undue risks that could injure or kill."
