'Aliens' promote pedestrian safety

The Neighbourhood Road Safety Initiative (NRSI) has launched a pedestrian safety campaign in Manchester - with the help of four 'extra terrestrials'.

As part of the light hearted We believe in little green men campaign, aliens handed out wrist bands and carried placards to protest at needless pedestrian road casualties.

Bus advertising, along with over five million bus tickets, will be deployed throughout Greater Manchester and parts of Lancashire throughout September.

"People are still taking risks on our roads," commented NRSI spokesperson Andrew Wake. "Increased use of mobile phones, personal hi-fi systems - and even being engrossed in conversation - can take our attention away from the dangers. Each year over 15,000 child pedestrians receive serious or minor injuries on the nation's roads and we think this is unacceptable."
