Saucy campaign breaks in Blackpool
Blackpool's road safety team, in partnership with the government's Neighbourhood Road Safety Initiative (NRSI), has launched a campaign about pedestrian safety.
The campaign uses the slogan, Are you wearing clean underwear? - picking up on the light-hearted phrase used by some people regarding having an accident and ending up in hospital.
The slogan is used on pastiche 'cheeky' postcards and posters, which have been distributed to bars, clubs, guesthouses and hotels in the resort.
The campaign was launched in August by the comedy double act Cannon and Ball, who are appearing at the town's Grand Theatre, and the current Miss Blackpool, Terri Williams.
"We were keen to lend our support for this campaign and both remember our mums using this phrase when we were growing up in Oldham," said Bobby Ball. "Road safety is an important issue but there's nothing to say that high profile campaigns can't be fun too."
Carol Bracegirdle, Blackpool's road safety manager, added: "Although Blackpool's pedestrian casualties have been among the highest in the country in recent years we've seen a year-on-year reduction in the casualty figures. But we can never be complacent and traditional hard-hitting road safety messages haven't always appeared to get through to people. We're hoping this new approach will raise a smile and encourage residents and visitors to think twice about the dangers on our roads."
