Schemes focus on pre-driver training

Two initiatives in different parts of the UK share a common objective - to educate young people before they get behind the wheel for real.

In South Wales, more than 1000 Usk youngsters will take part in the 2005 Megadrive pre-driver education initiative.

Megadrive is run by a partnership that includes Gwent police, the institute of advanced motorists and five unitary authorities in south east Wales. The scheme educates prospective drivers about the responsibility of driving a vehicle to give them a positive attitude before they get behind the wheel.

Participants experience 10 interactive workstations and are tested on various aspects including the ability to foresee potential hazards and the effects of drugs and alcohol on driving behaviour. The session ends with a 15-minute drive under the guidance of an approved instructor.

Wokingham District Council's fifth annual free pre-driver training event, Motorvation 2005, was organised by Mouchel Parkman.

Over 150 youngsters attended the day-long course, which uses mock tests and video footage to cover all aspects of driving theory, and culminates in a driving lesson. The final part of the day comprises a short driving lesson in a dual-control vehicle in a controlled environment.
