TfL launches Pass Plus London
TfL has launched Pass Plus London in a bid to cut the number of collisions involving new drivers - last year young motorists accounted for almost a quarter of the capital's car driver casualties.
Pass Plus is designed to improve driving standards and increase the confidence of newly passed drivers between 17-25 years, by offering extra on the road training.
Pass Plus London was launched at Alloys and Attitude, a London-wide road safety conference involving London's key road safety people. It will be open to all motorists living in a London borough aged 17-25 years, and who have passed their driving test during the last 12 months.
Janet Kirrage, TfL's road safety education manager, said: "The roads in London are getting safer every year but crash rates involving young drivers are staggeringly high. 24 people were killed while travelling in a vehicle driven by a 17-25 year old last year.
"Pass Plus London is being introduced by TfL to help tackle this problem. The more young people who take up the course, the more young lives will be saved."
As Pass Plus is not available for powered two wheeler riders, TfL will be teaming up with the London Advanced Motorcyclists Group (LAM) to promote the Institute of Advanced Motorists' Skills for Life programme, which offers riders under 25 years advanced training and a test for £75. TfL and LAM will offer a discount of more than 50 per cent to riders who pass the test.
