DfT clarifies child seat weight queries
With the updated seat belt and child restraint regulations now in force, the THINK! team has moved to clarify the position with regard to restraints and weight ranges.
Its guidance is as follows:
"Child seats and boosters must be type-approved to the standards set down in UN ECE 44.03 - see question 3 of the FAQs in the child car seats section of the THINK! site.
"RSOs should note that manufacturers are now legitimately combining weight ranges in one restraint so that, for example, a Group 3 restraint (22 - 36 kg), which may not have a back, is also type-approved as a Group 2 restraint (15 - 25 kg). "Provided that a child is within the weight range for which the restraint is designed, then the requirement in the legislation to use an appropriate type-approved child restraint will be met."
