Don’t ‘spill and kill’, campaign says

Motorcycles_kill_spills
Leeds City Council’s ‘Don’t Spill and Kill’ campaign, which highlights the hazards arising from diesel spills, was launched last week.

New corporate manslaughter legislation means an act of negligence by an employee could result in prosecution if spilled diesel results in a fatal crash. And owners of leaking vehicles can be required to pay the full cost of clean up after a spill.

Councillor Carter said: “Diesel spillages represent a serious hazard to riders of two wheeled vehicles, motorised or otherwise. Diesel vehicle operators need to do all they can to minimise these spillages for safety, environmental and economic reasons.”

Compliance activities will take place after the initial campaign to ensure that the council’s environmental enforcement policy is understood by those responsible for the spillages.
