The Macclesfield Road Safety Partnership has won the ‘project of the year’ at the recent SILK FM awards ceremony, for an initiative to identify young drivers most likely to be involved in a crash.
Using funding from Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership, the initiative comprises targeted police enforcement to stop and check young drivers when they are driving inappropriately. Instead of prosecution they are offered a place on a ‘Road Skills Experience’ course.
The full day course is based at a local fire station and delivered by highly qualified driver trainers. It comprises a mix of discussion and practical driving, and works on a personal level to provide hints, tips and advice on driving techniques.
The 60 young drivers who have already taken part have provided positive feedback, and a further four courses are planned between now and March 2009.
