Amey makes roadworker safety appeal

AMEY TEST

Roadworker safety is a serious issue for the highway maintenance industry - across the UK five roadworkers were killed in 2005. They are particularly vulnerable at short term or overnight road works sites.

In 2006, Amey’s special projects team analysed ‘near misses’ at roadworks to find ways to improve safety. The analysis shows that inappropriate driving behaviour is the root cause in the majority of cases. Incidents ranged from vehicles deliberately or accidentally hitting barriers to speeding cars entering the works area.

Bruce Donaldson, Amey’s unit manger for southwest Scotland urges: “Can you imagine trying to do your job with cars and HGVs flying past at 70mph yet all you have to protect you is a plastic cone?

“Cone sense, common sense is all about the realisation that the area within the cones is a workplace like any other and we’re determined to educate drivers to treat roadworks with appropriate respect.”
