Single drink could push drivers over limit

Generic_wine_glasses
Drivers could find themselves charged with drink driving after a single drink under plans to lower the legal alcohol limit.

Ministers are said to be 'minded' to cut the limit from 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood to 50 milligrams - the legal maximum in many European countries.

Cutting the limit to 50mg could put drivers over the limit after one strong pint of lager or an average glass of wine. The new laws could be in place within 18 months.

Under the proposals, police would also be given the power to stop motorists at random and breathalyse them, even if their driving has given no cause for concern.
