Pack targets business owners/managers

A new pack to help businesses comply with laws around driving is being circulated to more than 2000 businesses in the South Yorkshire area.

The pack has been put together by RSOs from South Yorkshire local authorities working in partnership with South Yorkshire’s police, fire and rescue, safety camera partnership and ambulance service.

A key element is a Safe Driving at Work booklet, which helps businesses deal with occupational road risk by directing readers to websites to develop their own driving policies.

Andy Holt, assistant chief constable of South Yorkshire Police, said: “We believe that the most dangerous part of any job is the driving. Around 1,000 people die every year in occupational accidents on roads compared with fewer than 350 in other work related accidents.”

Chris Hamer, chair of South Yorkshire Road Safety Practitioners, says company directors and bosses have a moral, as well as a legal, duty to manage their employees’ risks. “This obligation can be met by implementing a driving for work policy and this pack will help develop one,” he said.
